The avocado is different. While most fruit consist primarily of carbohydrates, the avocado is high in healthy fats.
Studies show that avocados excel at lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels. In fact, research indicates that avocados can reduce blood triglycerides by up to 20%, lower LDL cholesterol 22% and increase HDL cholesterol by up to 11%.
Consequently avocados may promote weight loss and help prevent metabolic syndrome, a cluster of symptoms that are a major risk factor for diabetes as well as heart disease.
Interestingly, consuming this superfood on a regular basis can also help you get more nutrition from the consumption of other healthful plants. That’s because some nutrients are fat-soluble, which means that they need to be combined with certain types of fat (like that found in avocados) in order to be utilized.
An avocado is also highly nutritious by itself and loaded with powerful antioxidants that can protect your eyes, reducing the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.
Many believe avocado extract may help relieve symptoms of arthritis and even act as a cancer preventative.
So it’s not surprising there are so many recipes centered around avocados. This one, Avocado Cream Sauce, is easy to prepare, healthful and delicious. It’s a really basic sauce you can experiment with based on individual preference, although it’s commonly enjoyed over smoky grilled chicken and pasta.
